I'd love it if I never have to use 911 on it at all! I keep the local non-emergency number listed on the phone and warn all visitors to my apartment not to use 911, but the local NEN instead. My issue with both Vonage and the FCC concerns the specific instances where the service is used outside the United States, such as broadband in Canada, some areas of Mexico, or even through broadband satellite services as DirecTV as advertised on http://www.mobileinternet.bz For now, a consistent address is being insisted on Vonage so that 911 can be utilized, yet I have heard of no provision that I can use to automatically notify Vonage that I am outside of the United States, and for any 911 center to NOT respond if dialed either by accident or result of hacking or other 3rd party intervention not known or controllable by me, including any hacking of my account in which Vonage service is obtained. What if I were on vacation and did not even have my Vonage service with me, yet someone hacked into the service and for fun, dialed 911? WHO is responsible for liabilities if I can't even tell Vonage I'm on vacation and to disable the 911 on the account for its duration? Not even Vonage legal has responded to this query in the past, and I seriously doubt the FCC has mulled over some of the aforementioned. I'm entirely for the idea of forward-thinking legislation and resolution, especially when protection of property and the unnecessary allocation of resources (a false alarm IOW) is concerned. I would pray something tragic can be avoided before it's finally on the radar screens. Just keep in mind it's been on mine for some time now!
