I couldn't find any posts with this particular problem but hopefully this will help some other sufferer who finds themselves in the same boat.

I have a small network with diverse equipment which shares out a Covad DSL 3Mbp/768kbp to tenants in my building. One user already had Vonage w/ a Motorola adapter and after a few small bad starts a couple years ago it has been working famously.

I've been tearing my hair out trying to configure another user's RTP300 for their new Vonage service. The unit would not keep a connection on the phone port for longer than say a few days. Then as I started to tweak the settings, ie. disable DHCP, etc it would even lose the connection to pc's (or macs) on the LAN side especially after a power cycle. The only thing that would bring it back was a hard reset (5 secs on the button) and even then that didn't always work.

Tech told me to plug it straight into the main router (zYxel 643 DSL) since it was going through a couple dumb switches en route. That worked the first time. Then I took it back upstairs and it worked... for a few days again.

Luckily the user was out of town so I've had some time to mess around with it. After multiple trys at any settings other than the default I gave up after the second day. Right before hitting the hay the idea occurred to me to plug the gateway (zYxel643) connection into the LAN (yellow) side and patch the WAN (blue) side straight over to the LAN (yellow) side and let the main router do what it has done so well all these years. Here's a sorta diagram:



Well, what an incredible relief when the "phone 1" light came straight on within a micro-second and has been steady on (except for the messages blinks) ever since (about 6 or 7 hours now) no matter how many settings I change. Well, I haven't tried to change everything but I was then able to go in and disable NAT and DHCP and every other router type function i could think of with impunity! HOORAAY!

I'm really impressed and brand loyal with linksys stuff, especially the WRT54g, but this RTP300 had me in doubt for a while. I would really like to see a setting in this router config that easily disables the router function such as in the config for the WRT54g. I would also like to see some of the other settings that are described in the RTP300 "...More" but aren't actually available in firm-1.00.52. For now everything seems ok and I hope I don't have to post back with new problems.

I'm in Brooklyn, NY with 3Mbps/768kbps Covad DSL. Connected equipment includes:

RTP300 w/ Vonage firmware 1.00.52
Motorola -?- w/ Vonage
Airport Express
zYxel 643
WRT54g
PC's
Mac's
Linksys 5 and 8 port switches
Siemens 8 port switch (unfortunately)

It's not included in any instructions because it's a total hack. You didn't mention
silly me.. but, yes I had it hooked up according to the instructions and tech
I think that hack should work pretty well, but make sure you TURN OFF DHCP on the
