I can tell you how I have my wrt54g and rt31p2 hooked up. The wrt54g is hooked to the cable modem and the rt31p2 is hooked to the wrt54g. I changed the local ip address on the rt to 192.168.1.2 so it is on same subnet as wrt54g (192.168.1.1) Set the rt for static ip adress 192.168.1.10, leave subnet alone and set gateway to address of wrt54g (192.168.1.1)and turn off dhcp on the rt also. type ipconfig from dos prompt on your computer and see what dns servers are, put these in rt where it asks for dns entries. run 1 ethernet cable from wrt54g to Internet port on rt and then run another cable from any lan port on the wrt54g to any lan port on the rt.
