I can tell you exactly how I got my number scammed into this b/s situation. A few days ago, I saw a commercial for "doggie stairs" that were 2 for 19.99. That is a very cheap price for these items, I remembered the website and went to it yesterday. I was going to buy the steps online, until I noticed the webpage for checkout (where I would input my credit card info) was not encrypted. I chose to not transmit my personal financial data over unencrypted lines, so instead I called up the listed 800 number. On the phone, I got one of the automated robotic answerers, that could do voice recognition to its questions. I never talked to a human. Fine, as long as it worked, I didn't care. Then when I thought I was done, the robot tries to upsell me on the "delux" version of the stairs. No. How about "delux" fabric to cover the stairs? No. Ok, well, now you get to hear about three additional offers (something about pet stain removal, some pet brush, and I don't remember the third). I was unable to bypass this forced commerical on the phone. Again, I didn't care that much. They failed to upsell me on anything, and I was paying the price I expected to pay. (By the way, if they had upsold me on all items being offered, my price would have gone from $19.99 to about $100). Oh, and then they said it would be 4-6 weeks for delivery, unless I wanted to pay $10 for expedited handling (not shipping) and they could have it out of the warehouse in 3-5 days. Neat, but no thanks. That was all yesterday. Then today, about 11am, I get the phone call. Caller ID shows the number is 813-541-0001. My phone number is unlisted, unpublished, and on my state's "do-not-call" list. I very very very rarely get a telemarketer, and when I do, it's usually a non-profit. So I answer, and I hear some young-ish sounding girl go through her spiel (and in the background, it sounded like a stock exchange, just tons of other sellers cranking out their lines) about having a great offer for me today, and I think something about a $5000 sweepstakes. I can't remember it all, she spoke very quickly. But the last thing she said, I remember perfectly. She said, "And we'll put it on your credit card ending in 1234" (not my real last 4). I stopped in my tracks. How could she have my credit card? Well, the only thing I can think of, is that this company is closely affiliated with my dog stairs fiasco. So I asked her who she worked for. "Direct Discount Reward Center". I told her I did not want whatever she was offering, and to have my name removed from her database. Her exact response- "Sure, why not." And hung up. Any more calls and my attorney general is going to be contacted in addition the the appropriate federal office. Ugh.
