Last night I was bored, and decided to check all of my wall jacks in my apartment for the elusive "incoming connection from outside." Sure as hell, I found it. Here's how. One of your jacks in your apartment, probably closest to ground level, and usually like a main line, not a bedroom, is where you find this. It might even be under a silver plated jack, like the one near my kitchen. There's two sets of wires there, and all you have to do is disconnect the ones that kill dial tone to all the jacks. Take a peek, and tell us what you find.
