Vonage I assume that what you're trying to do is use your house wiring for both phones.

I assume that what you're trying to do is use your house wiring for both phones. How you do that depends on how your house is wired. However, I'll assume for the moment that your house is wired like many, using RJ11 jacks with all four contacts wired. That provides for 2 lines. (You can open a jack and confirm that there are 4 wires connected to it, all different colors.) If this is the case, then your landline is hooked to line 1. That's why plugging in your phone makes it use the landline. The phone is wired to pick up line 1 from the jack. To make it work with Vonage the simplest way, get two of the splitters called "line1/line2 (L1/L2) splitters. (These are not the same as simple Y splitters.) Plug one of them into the wall jack where you want to plug your phone; plug the other into a wall jack where you want to plug in your Vonage box. Plug your phone into the L1 port on one of the splitters. You should hear the dial tone for your landline. This is just a test. Now plug the phone into the L2 port. You should not hear a dial tone. Now plug the Vonage box into the L2 port on the other splitter. Make sure you get this right; don't plug it into the L1 port. Now you should hear the Vonage dial tone on your phone, and you're ready to go. You can move both splitter and phone to any other jack, or get more splitters to use more phones with other jacks.

Vonage and land line over Cat5

How do you run Vonage and a separate phone connection over Cat5. This seems like
Yes, you can do it that way. Of course, the Vonage adapter uses the line 1 terminals
I had not thought about the fact that the telephone line coming out of the Vonage
Yup, a crossover cord is another way. Just be sure that you've got things right
I have to ask how accidentally hooking the Vonage line up to an active land line
The normal open line voltage on a telephone line is around 50 volts. Connect two
Thanks, your responses have been very helpful
