I am writing my current config up front and then will explain what I am trying to accomplish.
Current Config:
Phone line plugged into
2Wire DSL Modem/Router plugged into
8-port Switch (connects all rooms in house to internet)
My Motorola VT1005V is connected to one of the 8-ports
I have another 8-port switch connected to the LAN connection on VT1005V
I then have several computers connected to the second 8-port switch.
My question is this... my 2Wire DSL Modem/Router does a great job of assigning out IP addresses to all of the devices/computers connected to the first switch. It also has some great features for managing those devices it sees on the LAN.
At first I had the Motorola VT1005V sharing the second 8-port switch, but had trouble with the QoS, so I placed it in front of the second 8-port switch by plugging the LAN connection to the Uplink on the switch and then plugging in all of the other machines behind it.
My problem is that the machines behind the Motorola VT1005V are on an entirely different subnet because the VT1005V acts as a router and is assigning IP addresses. When I have disabled DHCP on it, I cannot get any machines behind it to get IP address from the 2Wire router.
I'd like to put the Motorola V1005V right behind the 2Wire DSL Modem/Router and in front of the first 8-port switch. I'd then be able to plug it into the structured wiring for my phones so I can take advantage of my Vonage in any room. If I place it in line and let it assign IP addresses, I will not be able to take advantage of many of the features of the 2Wire router being able to see all devices on the network.
Is it possible to have the Motorola V1005V simply pass all traffic through it since it does not really need the IP address except for management. My assumption is the data transfer for Voip is all at layer 2 since it is recognizing it by MAC address over the internet.
Any help or suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. My appologies too if this has already been brought up. I am new on here.
