I am very impressed with ShoreTel's Call Manager. I'd really like to find (write?) such a utility for Vonage (running on Windows).
I thought VonaLink's ScreenPop might provide a good measure of this functionality, but it's not so hot with dialing, has virtually no call handling, and its incoming call detection relies on packet sniffing which only works on non-switched networks. (My gigabit network is switched for a reason (performance), and I'm not going back to using a hub just to get Vonalink's software to work.)
In doing some research on the net, I found others that're using CleverKeys and Click2Call to make it easy to dial numbers contained in highlighted text in any Windows application. My problem, though, was the numbers shown in Outlook contacts are formatted "pretty" - they contain parentheses and dashes (e.g., "(512)555-1212") which make Click2Call choke; it only wants to see digits.
To get around this (and I'll be the first to admit this is kind of a big hammer for such a seemingly small problem :-)) I wrote an .asp page and run it locally under IIS (which is included as part of Windows XP). This page strips all of the "junk" characters out of the highlighted text passed to it, and then redirects to Click2Call. (I first wrote it as a local javascript page, but Windows security asks for explicit permission to execute such scripts (rightly so) every time they're invoked which makes for a crummy user experience.)
This solution works like a champ for me, and I thought others might be interested in my solution. Feel free to PM me if you'd be interested in seeing the .asp page I wrote as part of this solution.
