Vonage I am suprised with a 4.3 score from testyourvoip that you are having audio problems

I am suprised with a 4.3 score from testyourvoip that you are having audio problems on Vonage. The best you can get is a 4.4. Is your Vonage connection continually poor or are you having intermittent problems? Have you tried testing your Vonage line using the Golden Phone ?

A little information on how to use PingPlotter:

PingPlotter is good to get a more lengthy view of your connection than provided by the speed tests. Run to a good Internet site, Vonage suggested I use Yahoo!.

For our audio connection we are looking for a stable connection with low latency. A connection with high latency is going to produce an audible delay. A connection with low average latency but that is unstable is going to produce garbled audio.

The audio is broken into packets and sent across the Internet. Only packets that arrive in order can be used. So, if your connection has low latency but is unstable you can have a lot of packets beating their predecessors to the destination forcing the predecessor packets to get dropped. Dropped packets here and there are not a problem, you won't even notice them, but when a lot of packets start dropping you have quality issues.

Now, refer to this figure for understanding what PingPlotter is telling us:

The top graph shows only the last 10 samples, the range can be changed by changing "Samples to include" in the lower left hand "Statistics" box. What we want to see are short bars. This means our connection is stable.

As we read down in the top graph we see hop 8 is reported as having 100% packet loss. Actually it just is not responding to pingplotter's pings. If it really had packet loss then there would be no hop 9, 10, ...

What we really care about is the line graph at the bottom. First let's deal with the big red bar at the center. I caused that by disconnecting my computer from the Internet. This is bad, if you see this it means your Internet connection is dropping out. Hopefully you aren't see this.

Next, note the spikes. These are times when the latency became very high. Undoubtedly if I was on a call packets would have been dropped. The Internet responds by sending new packets through a new path. This is what is referred to in ping plotter as route changes. Note however that my spikes are not very wide. This means that the quality should be OK.

Note however that overall the line remains fairly consistent in terms of latency, especially if I zoom in. The differences between samples is referred to as jitter.

This is good and makes for good quality audio.

I hope this explanation gets you started on using pingplotter to analyze your connection. Don't be afraid to let it run for a while and collect some real data.

Note: I have a little knowledge and that makes me dangerous. I have tried to explain things without using too much jargon. If I have made any gross mistakes will someone please correct them.
