I am not an expert, and a lot of what follows is speculation, but I haven't changed my opinion yet on what will happen.
Although the length of time it has taken Vonage to get this IPO out the door is troubling, I don't believe it is dead in the water. In my opinion Google has done well enough that Vonage will go public. It is the only real way for the original investors to get stinking rich . . . or rather more stinking rich.
The article has some flaws, sure Vonage is hemorrhaging money, but that has been their plan. They intentionally pushed off profitability. The fact that Vonage has significant competition is actually worse for a takeover than an IPO. An IPO is going to evaluate Vonage on $/customer and little else. Except for acquiring customers it would be cheaper to start a Voip carrier from scratch with brand new equipment and software than designed specifically at Vonage's size than it would be to acquire and integrate Vonage into an existing telecom structure (CRM, billing, etc). Furthermore much of Vonage's labor pool is outsourced. Competition hurts the $/customer value making a purchase less lucrative, especially since Vonage is considered to have the best service meaning their cost per customer will be higher than competitors meaning Vonage is less of a value.
However, Vonage will probably be acquired at some point (or possibly merge) depending on how well Vonage is managed and how the market responds to the IPO. The guy credited with creating Vonage is not a "VoIP" person like Jeff Pulver, he is a money person and is probably already looking for his next project.
