I am in the EXACT same boat. I cannot get cox here so its not an option. I have been researching this matter. In some parts of my state it is possible to get stand alone DSL W/O phone service. This is still being worked on and will proberly be available in maybe another or so everywhere as stand alone . If NOT available as stand alone you can switch your POTS (plain old tel service) line to mesured local service. Drop any long distance carrier you have for savings. Depending on your state /market region measured service here costs under $10 a month before taxes. The measured local service allows you 90 minutes talk time a month on LOCAL CALLS. You can receive UNLIMITED calls inbound. toll free 800 calls are unlimited as well. Even though this costs a little extra each month the advantage to this is it provides you a POTS BACKUP line for 911 calls, power outage or BB outage. You can still use your POTS line as a second line to receive unlimited calls . You would use your vonage for all other local and toll and long distance outgoing calls.
