Vonage I am brand new (15 minutes) into the ownership of a bright shiney new Vonage phone
I am brand new (15 minutes) into the ownership of a bright shiney new Vonage phone number. I had called the 888 number to ask a question, then signed up online. Here is my situation and the question I asked:
I travel 100% of the time for work and live on my laptop. I am looking for a telephone service that will work with little or no additional hardware running through my laptop at home, the office, customer sites, Starbucks, etc. Will the $24.99 Residential Premium Plan do all that? I was told yes, absolutely and you can use the Softphone software to provide portability.
Hmmm...now I think I was totally screwed in this deal. If I understand the posts here, there are two major problems:
1) Softphone and/or V-Phone cannot work unless you have a routable public IP address or can control static NAT to the IP. Am I understanding this correctly? It does not, in fact, have an agent like Go-To-My-PC that initiates an outgoing TCP connection to the Vonage servers...? So Starbucks and many of the newer wireless only hotels are out of the question for me?
2) I cannot in fact use the service I paid for for anything, but have to buy a second, VERY time restricted (500 minute) softphone account for an additional fee, even though I have no desire or need for a second phone number or service. Is this true?
Someone please let me know...so I can cancel my account immediately and go check out Skype or someone else.
