By the way, it's normal for the phone light on the Vonage box to blink whenever a phone plugged into it is off hook. Is that the light that starts blinking, or is it another one? Also, is the phone one of those that allows you to key in the whole number before you hit an "execute" button? I'm just guessing here, but it's possible that nothing at all is going on with the Vonage box. Rather, the phone is "on hook" and not transmitting any RF until you finish dialing a number. Then it goes "off hook", the Vonage box flashes (as it's supposed to), and the phone starts transmitting. The RF upsets the modem and ....
