Vonage How long have you had that particular number? If it's only been a month and it has

How long have you had that particular number? If it's only been a month and it has never been able to receive calls from non-Vonage phones , it seems that Vonage assigned you a number that was ported away by a previous customer or was given a bad number to begin with by their carrier, and in turn you received a bad number.

Unfortunately, this scenario does happen as numbers can be ported away by customers, and customers are in no way required to tell Vonage that they have moved their number to another carrier. When that customer cancels, Vonage assumes that the number is still with them, and then it gets assigned out to someone else. That person then discovers that calls from non-Vonage phones get an error message, or someone else picks up.

The other scenario is that calls from Non-Vonage phones to yoru number did work in the past, but recently stopped working. In that case it wounds like another carrier slammed, or in other words took your number without authorization, and assigned it to one of their customers.

If it's the first case, Vonage is going to need to assign your a new number. If your Vonage account is a business account, I think they refund any losses such as printing your number on stationary. If your are running your business off a residential account, I think your are S.O.L. Though, that is what I recall, don't quote me on it.

If it's the second case, and your number was erroneously ported away by another carrier, Vonage will go ahead and get the number back to you.

And now for some "edumacation" for the nerdy people out there who are wondering why calls from pstn don't work and why Vonage calls do when the number isn't with Vonage:

Vonage does not need the "physical" phone number to make calls out. In actuality, the only real use for the "physical" phone number on the Vonage network is to let non-Voage lines know where to direct the call so that it makes it to the Vonage system, and then Vonage goes ahead and forwards that call through the internet, through your modem, through the Vonage device and into your phone.

The reason Vonage to Vonage calls always work, whether the physical number is with one of Vonage's Carriers or not, is that Vonage to Vonage calls stay within the Vonage network. They do not need to go outside to a carrier for POTS signal translation, because they have the IP address of the opposite end they are calling and they know it's a SIP-to-SIP (The type of Voip signal that Vonage uses) call. Therefore they do not need a "physcial" number.

Theoretically, Vonage could have an entire network of people on it with out a single physical phone number. In this case though, only Vonage people would be able to talk to other Vonage people. Anyone outside the Vonage network would not be able to connect to a Vonage user. However, Vonage users would be able to make calls outside of the Vonage network.

I think I just pull a nerd muscle typing this :P
