Hmm. That's the first time I've heard that one.

In the WRTP54G (and I assumed also the RTP300, since they are so similar), the DNS address fields are open for data entry regardless of what you use for settings in the client IP settings.

The DNS1-3 settings should allow you to override the DNS servers you want to present to the RTP300's DNS clients, and will also override the DNS server(s) the RTP300 uses itself. But it will not stop you from using "Obtain IP address from DNS" as your client setting.

I know that on my WRTP54G, I had LOTS of DNS problems with all of my clients, then I hard-coded 4.2.2.4 in DNS1 and 4.2.2.6 in DNS2 (too lazy to look up my ISP's DNS servers that day), turned off the DNS cache on the WRTP54G, did a lease refresh/renew from each client, and never had DNS problems after that day. I eventually put another router in front of the WRTP54G, but that was for some other problems, and had nothing to do with DNS.

As an alternative, you can go to each one of your client machines and set their DNS server settings to "use the following DNS servers" and enter some working DNS servers instead of "obtain DNS settings automatically". That way, the client gets IP addresses from the RTP300 but bypasses its DNS proxy. I did that for a while, too, but I have a VxWorks-based ReplayTV that requires fixed IP address when using hardcoded DNS servers, and VxWorks doesn't handle fixed IP addresses very well, so I fixed it on the router so I could go back to pure DHCP on all my clients again.
