Vonage Hi xcruncxc: The wireless network came with the router; before this

Hi xcruncxc:

The wireless network came with the router; before this I just used a cable modem to one machine.

When I call the softphone, I get approx. 3 seconds of audio then everything "dies". But there's another factor I haven't brought up; The calls that are faliing... are from my Vonage landline ATA box to the computer via the softphone account - a venerable & reliable member of this forum tells me:

" ... If you have two Voip clients who are trying to connect peer-to-peer on a local network, but they are using the Internet IP address, then that request is sent to the outside of the router (the Internet side). The router sees that the request should go back inside, so it tries to route it back in, but THERE HAS BEEN NO REQUEST to match it to. Best case, the router routes the request back to the originator, which means your Voip line starts talking to itself (pretty silly); worst case the packet is just thrown away.... Unfortunately, with most Voip solutions, the SIP port is generally the same for all devices.
So if you have two of them, you cannot forward a single port to both.. "

The Vonage ATA box folks use for landlines behind their Internet connections are, unfortunately, just Vonage softphone accounts that have ATA boxes to replace the PC that the softphone accounts reside on. They use the same "gateway", and what I'm beginning to believe is also part of the problem is this:

The Vonage "Gateway" in NY,NY sees an incoming call from a Vonage number, says "Aha! This is a Vonage-to-Vonage call, I'll just shuttle it straight from the 'outbound_to_POTS' server over to the 'inbound_to_Vonage_softphone' server.."
And therefore, my NetGear modem-router is running into the problem described above.

There's a little more to the "story" than just my private experiments; I'm also employed by company who is having me test various types of user broadband configurations.

This is a big hurdle; the BrightHouse Networks and/or Time-Warner's Road Runner Divisions are switching solely to these NetGear modem-routers which, as *trekologer states above, are apparently pretty much junk. (In more ways than one - mine drops wireless connections to the other computers constantly)

There are probably hundeds of thousands of BHN/T-W customers out there who are using or will be using these "default" NetGear modem-routers; I'm hoping to pre_de-bug various issues future customers will run into.

So far, no real luck. And BTW, thanks to both of you for your responses.

Does anyone have any ideas at this point .. ??
