Vonage Hi there, yes I live in Gatineau - the Aylmer sector. Keep in mind that Gatineau

Hi there, yes I live in Gatineau - the Aylmer sector.

Keep in mind that Gatineau has a population of 72,000 people, whereas across the river in Ottawa, there are over 1 million people. Vonage, as well as other new phone companies have focused on larger cities. If you look at the cities across Canada where Vonage and Primus offer service, they are all larger than Gatineau with a heavier population. Even Sherbrooke is larger than Gatineau, but if you pick the Sherbrooke 819 area code, you will get a Sherbrooke exchange which means you will be long distance to everyone in the Outaouais region.

The best solution is to get a 613 number. It actually works out better anyhow, thanks to Bell and their ridiculous setup.

5 cities on the Quebec side amalgamated in 2004. There was Aylmer, Hull, Buckingham, Masson-Angers and Gatineau itself. While we were all split, Bell charged long distance to call from Aylmer to Buckingham or Gatineau. Now that we have amalgamated and are all one big city, Bell continues to charge long distance to dial someone living in the former areas as mentioned above. This is ridiculous. The area that comprises the new Gatineau is nowhere nearly as big as Ottawa, yet if you live in Ottawa you can pretty much call anywhere toll free. This issue has been in the newspapers lots, but Bell is still not doing a darn thing about it. Through Bell, it is long distance to call Gatineau (old) from Gatineau (Aylmer). Yet, Gatineau (old) and Gatineau (Aylmer) can both call Ottawa. Right now, If you have an 819 number, people in Kanata, Orleans, Bar Haven, and several other surrounding areas including North Gower cannot call you without long distance charges.

If you pick a 613 number, people in all of these areas can call you toll free. It's a great way to beat Bell!

Another reason why 819 (Gatineau) is not offered is because it would be difficult to set up the system for local calling here. Ottawa is local to Gatineau, but Vonage goes by Area Codes, not physical location. Even though Gatineau is about 1 mile away from Ottawa, it has a different area code because Gatineau is in Quebec and Ottawa is in Ontario. The only two provinces I know of that shares the same area code in Canada are Nova Scotia and PEI. Since Gatineau has the 819 area code, and Ottawa has the 613 area code, 613 calls would not be considered local if you had a Gatineau number. This is one of the big problems when two cities are next door to each other and share different area codes. Even Rogers wireless cell phones cannot call toll free to the Gatineau area if you are in Ottawa. They have it divided by the area code, which is a shame.

You would end up losing your 819 number unfortunately, but that's good! Your local calling area will be so much bigger with a 613 number, and people from all over the Outaouais region will now call you toll free. I happily gave up my Gatineau number which restricted me.

Here is something else to keep in mind. With Vonage, you never need to dial the area code when calling someone who has your same area code. Even if it is long distance! For example, Kingston, Ontario has the same area code as Ottawa, Ontario (613). If you call the 7-digit number of someone living in Kingston, you will get them.

The down side of this is that if you have a 613 number, you will need to dial the area code if it is not a 613 number that you are calling. Therefore if you get a 613 line, you will need to dial the 819 area code for any Gatineau calls that you make.

Keep in mind that Bell announced within the next 3 years, everyone will be required to dial all 10 digits if they are living in the Ottawa/Gatineau region because they are running out of phone numbers. If you are with Vonage, you will not have to worry about that. You will already be dialing 10 digits for Gatineau, and for Ottawa you can continue to dial only 7, while people with Bell will be forced to dial all 10 digits no matter what.

I hope this helps you make your decision.
