Thought I was having random problems with the service, but I've finally narrowed it down to a very specific, predictable, and reproducable problem: Cell phone calls, in or out, have a serious network (telco network) switching delay.

I don't know yet it it's ALL cell networks, or just Cingular because I've only tested with Cingular so far.

"Hello? ... Hello? ... HELLO!" I first noticed this when I was being yelled at by my wife whenever I called home from my cell. I finally figured out that when she yelled HELLO! it was because she'd already said Hello twice with no response from my end.

I've tested it out a couple of dozen times, and for both inbound and outbound calls, the calling side keeps ringing for at least 2 seconds after the other side had picked up.

For inbound (to Vonage), it then takes another 2-4 seconds at least for sound to get through in either direction. That means, for whoever picks up the Vonage phone, they have 4-6 seconds or more of NOTHING.

Furthermore, calls from Vonage to a cell phone take 7-10 seconds from the last digit dialed until the start of the first ring. That's nuts.

In comparison, calls to and from landlines, even internationally, are about as fast as when I used a regular landline. No complaints there whatsoever.

One the connection with a cell phone is made, the call is great. Good quality audio in both directions, clear, loud, no complaints.

Obvisouly (to me, anyway) there's a problem in setting up the initial call routing between the Vonage telco network and the cell phone provider's telco network. It's only the initial connection, otherwise the entire call would be problematic with delays, echos and dropped words, which is not the case.

I've been going in circles for a week with tech support. I'm up to L2 so far. I hope to get escalated to L3 soon, this is getting tedious. So far they've "made some setting changes" which were uploaded to my router/adapter. That was entirely pointless since the problem has nothing to do with my end, its a telco network switching issue, but customer support has a playbook they have to trudge though. It's easier to let them get it out of their system than to try to explain the futility.

The last response I got from them was "We understand you're having call quality issues. We're looking into it. If there's anything else we can help you with, please contact us." This was their attempt at closing the call ticket. I've responded and I'm waiting. Call quality issues? Doesn't even sound like they understand what the problem actually is, so I'm not convinced they can actually "look into it".

I think I'll add a poll here to see if anyone else is having a to/from cell phone connection delay, but if you take the poll, please reply to this pose also and let me know what cell provider you have and where you are located.
