Hi Steve and all who have been following this thread.

Happily, I now have an ethernet connection for both the VT2142 and SB5101 modem. Now the internet can be accessed through the phone adapter while the phone is being used.

I called Dell support since I have a Delll Dimension 8200 computer and explained that the cnetPro200WL device was not connected and that I thought the driver was missing. I booted up the Dell Utilities, Drivers disc as directed by the technician and attempted to reinstall the cnet adapter driver. After the first try, we searched for the adapter under MyComputer (right click)>Properties>Hardware Manager> Drivers>network adapters, it wasn't there !
After a second attempt failed, the tech asked me to disconnect all cables, open the computer case, remove the ethernet card and reinsert it. After doing this, I then reconnected everything, booted up and the cnetPRO200WL appeared under "Network Adapters". Also, both of the LED lights on the back of the computer were lit up whereas previously they were not. After connecting the VT2142 to the modem and computer and the phone adapter after all lights on the VT were lit, I connected the phone cable from the wall to the VT and waited for the phone light to become solid (not blinking). As I said at the beginning of this post, everything now works perfectly. The real culprit here was that the cnet adapter card was not fully seated in its socket. I noticed before removing it that the green lever that locks down all cards was not engaged!!! Not sure how this happened, but it could have come loose the last time I cleaned the inside of the case. It appears that the software was there the whole time but because the hardware (network card) was loose, the modem could be connected only directly to the computer and not throught the adapter. Hope this helps someone who may run into a similar problem.
