Hi. I am new to this forum, but have been a Vonage subscriber since July 2004.

I contacted Vonage on 12/12/05 when I could not order the new WiFi phone from their website. A simple request to order the device resulted in a long discussion regarding the misleading information posted on the Vonage WiFi phone. The phone is available to existing customers IF you add an additional line of service. The phone cannot co-exist with the current hardwired Voip adapters and must have its own IP address. Being an IT professional, I can understand this limitation, but I take issue with Vonage's lack of information to their existing customers regarding the need to have a dedicated line. Why would I spend $80 for the phone (with rebate) plus $15.00 (excluding taxes)/month for this service? This is not a "no cost" option for existing customers.

Existing customers can always cancel their current service and order the WiFi phone with its own number, but you are limited to ONE handset for your house/place of business. Using the hardwired adapter allows you to use multi handset/expandable phone systems. Since the WiFi phone uses 802.11b technology, there might be interference issues if your home WLAN uses this WiFi standard.

I was told by Vonage that they will be selling these phones at Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. with or without service activation. If you purchase a phone without service, you can call Vonage CS and have the phone's MAC address added to your account. This will enable you to have one phone number, BUT you cannot have the hardwired adapter and the phone on at the same time. One of these devices MUST be powered off for you to receive calls.

If the WiFi phone requires its own line, a lower cost service option must be offered to exisiting customers wanting this phone. The Vonage "soft phone" is $4.99/month and this concept can be used for the WiFi phone.

Sorry for the long rant. You might agree or disagree with my observations and suggestions, but unless someone is paying for the additional line, there is no benefit to this phone. I went with Voip to save money.

Regards & Happy Holidays....JL
