Hi Everyone:
I discovered tonight that the Gizmo Project (http://www.gizmoproject.com/index.html) has released v2.0 of their softphone product today, and it now boasts support for connecting to Asterix and other Voip systems.
I have been experimenting with Gizmo 2.0 for Mac on my Apple PowerBook and connecting it to Vonage using my Softphone account. First off, the software is quite nice on its own, and supports both IM and Voip. I used version 1.x for a short while when I was evaluating Voip services last fall (of course, I eventually decided to go with Vonage), and so am familiar with their software. It is a bit more full featured than the X-Pro software Vonage supplies, with a lot more options.
Unfortunately, I have to report that I'm having mixed results using this new version to connect to Vonage. After a bit of trial and error in getting the account information in (tip: if you're trying this it apears you need a Gizmo account. You then edit your Gizmo account in the Preferences -> Accounts panel, and add in the Vonage server and your softphone log-in information as the "secondary service". I tried to simply create a second Vonage-only account, and this won't work - you'll get an error as it then tries to log in to the Gizmo server using your Vonage account details), I was able to make outbound calls using the Gizmo software via my Vonage softphone line.
A very good start, but trying to call the other way from my Vonage home line to my softphone number didn't cause Gizmo to register the incoming call at all.
It is possible that this is a firewall issue on my end - I don't typically use Vonage Softphone when I'm at home (as I have the perfectly functional real phone that people normally call), so I'm going to try it tomorrow from my office at the lab to see if I have better success. However, for those of you looking for a potential alternative to X-Pro and/or SJphone, especially if you only intend to use it for outgoing calls, you might want to give Gizmo 2.0 a look. Unless I can get it to answer calls I doubt it will replace the X-Pro software for me, but it is always good to have alternatives.
Gizmo is available for Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux. And no, I'm not associated with the project in any way - I just wanted to make people aware of another potential option and my results with it so far.
More tomorrow after further experimentation.
