Looking for some insight into my problem.

I've had Vonage for about almost two months now. My main PC
recently got severly infected, and I'm leaving it off for the
time being. It was running Win 2K Pro with McAfee Virus Scanner, which
I believe had the Firewall running as well.

I never really had a problem with anything in that setup, it may have done
the following problem a few times in two months of service:

Road Runner Modem >>> Vonage MTA vt1005v >>> PC w/ Win 2k.

In the meantime, I've been using my laptop running Win XP home, with
McAfee Virus Scanner (with Firewall running).

The internet connection drops almost every half hour to forty-five minutes, no
exceptions (seems systematic). I still get a dial-tone on both phone and fax,
but no internet.

On running IPCONFIG, my IP address for the laptop ethernet card simply vanished
(the computer supplied the 169 private IP addy).
Upon disabling and re-enabling my ethernet adapter, it zeros out any ip address,
and won't fetch a new one (can't ping or see the Vonage "router").

And also, as a side not, I enabled the 50K "good" voice quality just now, so we'll
see if that fixes it, but I don't think it's the bandwidth thats a problem (1963 down/541 up)
on my last dslreports.com test.

Something is telling me that its a Win XP or laptop problem, because I really can't recall
ever having this problem with my regular pc.

I'm also considering putting the MTA behind a router, but I would like to see if I can
resolve this issue without buying new hardware.

Any help or advice would be appreciated. Just looking for some opinions
