Just thought I'd post this in case anyone else is having a problem
Hey guys,
Just thought I'd post this in case anyone else is having a problem with their answering machine (I know, Vonage has voice mail, which I use as a backup, but with voicemail, a person can't screen calls).
My answering machine always answered calls just fine, but when the caller hung up, the Vonage telephone adapter would IMMEDIATELY start a dial tone.
The answering machine would think that this noise was the caller still talking.
The Vonage telephone adapter would think the line is off the hook...so it would start with the "mild beeping", and then after a few seconds, that intense LOUD beeping.
Meanwhile, the answering is recording all this.
Finally, after maybe 30 seconds, the telephone adapter would give up and stop the beeping.
A that point, the answering machine, hearing silence, would stop recording.
So every one of my answering machine messages would end with 30 seconds of medium then LOUD beeping.
Very irritating.
So I called Vonage (India)...can't understand the guy...he transfers me to "high level tech support" (in New Jersey with real American engish-speaking people thank goodness).
This tech support guy does not hardly let me say two words...he goes on and on about how wrong I am, and that my ans machine will NEVER work with Vonage...and get this...it's because the ans machine is an ANALOG device, and Voip is DIGITAL.
I try to explain to him that the Vonage telephone adapter changes the digital Voip to analog voice, and that is why in fact I can talk to him on my ANALOG phone that I (and everyone else) has been using for years.
He doesn't get it.
I tell him thanks very much but can I speak to someone else...another "high level" tech person please.
He transfers me back to India!
I immediately ask for another high level tech person...I get transfered right away.
This tech LISTENS to me, and gets to work on the problem...after much deliberation, he had to increase the length of time the telephone adapter inserts silence after a call is hung up (or something like this)...I think he set it to 4 seconds.
IT WORKS.
The answering machine now hears silence after the caller hangs up, the ans machine then hangs up, and the telephone adapter never has to start beeping.
All that took about an hour.
Whew!
Well, I just wanted people to know that your answering machine, if you are using one, and if you are getting those nasty beeps at the end of each mesage, CAN be fixed by Vonage pushing a change to the telephone adapter.
