Here's what you need to do guys...

Go buy a WRT54GL - make sure it's the "L" model. You can get them all over the place for ~$50.00.

Then, go to Best Buy or Circuit City and buy the Linksys PAP2 - it's also $50.00 but as of right now you can send in a $50 rebate so it's basically free.

Download the Tomato firmware for the WRT54GL - http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato and update with 1.07.

When you get the PAP2 - go to vonage.com/activate and go through the step-by-step on how to add a new device and move your service for your Vonage phone lines to the PAP2. Takes less than 30 minutes after you make the change for the phone to work. Very easy to do.

Setup QoS via Tomato firmware. Pretty simple actually, just enter the MAC address of the PAP2 and give it highest priority - keep everything else at default and it works great.

Plug the PAP2 into one of the LAN ports on the on the 54GL. It will get an IP address if you have a DHCP server running on your network (or you let the 54GL handle DHCP). The manual details the procedure to use the phone handset to 'dial in' to the PAP2 and have it give you it's IP address so you can connect to the web interface and configure. If you want static IP's...then, just go to the IP and hard code a static IP if you don't want to use DHCP.

The voice quality for me has never been better - I'm totally sold on this setup and wish that I would have just done this a long time ago. The 54GL is solid and with the Tomato firmware the wireless signal is stronger throughout my house and the amount of customization and functionality is well beyond what you get with the OEM firmware. The QoS is great as well - complete with real-time graphs that allow you to see what's using the most traffic - even down to individiual connections if you so choose.

So, for basically the cost of the 54GL you can have a very reliable setup with a ton of customization and you won't have to deal with the piece of crap 'all in wonder' boxes that can barely do one thing well - let alone router, wireless, QoS, Voip, VPN's, etc... What kind of quality are you really expecting in a single sub-$50 box with limited configuration optioins.

Anyway, just my $.02. Best thing I've done and I'd highly recommend this to anyone who is dealing with the 2542's. Vonage won't send you a PAP2 or DLINK VTA...they don't carry them anymore so you'll have to pick them up at a retail outlet but they are easy to find. I had a helluva time trying to get the 2542 to even work behind my 54GL. The PAP2 was up and running in less than 5 minutes.

Finally, sell or send back the piece of shit VT2542. My service has been up and down for the better part of the last two weeks and I got Vonage to credit my accout for a couple weeks of service.
