Here's what's happening.
Let's say you call your phone number from your own phone. Your phone is busy, so it forwards you to voice mail. The voice mail system then checks to see who is calling by looking at the CallerID info and determines what to do from there. Obviously most people don't call their own voice mail to leave messages for themselves (well, maybe there's some real lonely people out there), so they have the VM system assuming you're wanting to check your messages. So, with Vonage, you'd get "Please enter your passcode for this phone."
If the CallerID info doesn't reach the VM system or it gets Private Caller, it doesn't know that you are you, and probably assumes something went wrong, so it sends you to the main auto attendant.
I just tried dialing *67 *123 and it behaves in the same manner.
