SB5100 cable modem -> Netgear WGR614V3 -> Linksys RT31P2.

During initial setup, I plugged a computer into the Linksys (lan port) to configure its Wan port for my subnet(s). (I also have another Netgear WGR614V2 plugged into the top level WGR614V3 that isolates parts of my network from the other side but that is really unrelated and you can ignore that complexity). So with the proper network subnet mask and static IP address and remote management enabled and name servers properly forwarded, I unplugged my laptop from the RT31P2 lan port and moved it into the wiring closet and plugged the RT31P2 WAN into to a LAN port of the WGR614. Got dial tone, made call. Seemed ok.

I also continued experimenting and unplugged the RPT31P2 from the hard wired LAN port of the netgear router went several hundred feet away and plugged the WAN port of the RTP31P2 into a netgear WGE101 wireless bridge. And that also worked. i.e. SB5100 -> Netgear WGR614V3 -> ... wireless G ... WGE101 bridge -> RTP31P2. That was only a "what if" and it worked, but not a configuration I needed at the moment, so put things back into the wiring closet as initially described.

I've also experimented with other topology (SB5100 -> WGR614V3 -> RT31P2 -> WGR614V2 -> ...other desktops) and that also works for outbound traffic (didn't test inbound traffic as the desktops aren't supposed to accept incoming ports anyway) ... naturally had to make a minor config change on the WGR614V2 to put itself on the proper subnet but kept its children where they were topology wise.

So far I've not had any upside or downside bandwidth problems to consider worrying about reserving bandwidth for voice, so having the RTP31P2 immediately after the modem so it can divert bandwidth from the other equipment is not desired in my case. I have also heard (but not proven) that the RTP31P2 has trouble with VPN traffic coming in, so that is another reason I have it placed secondary after that inbound traffic splits off in another direction at the top level netgear router. In my configuration at the moment, I left its DHCP server turned on in the RT31P2 so it can hand out addresses on its UNIQUE subnet IF I desire to plug a lap top into one of its LAN ports for some reason. But I do have it assigned a static WAN IP address that fits into the topology of the router it is plugged into.

My point? There are many working configurations with pros and cons each. It is very very flexible. Having the RT31P2 at the very top of the food chain will allow it to limit how much bandwidth your other computers are allowed to have as well as allow all of its own ports to be opened up to Vonage and the world. On the other hand, leaving your top level router in place and hooking up the RT31P2 under it also has its advantages. I'm not sure which of the ports really have to be forwarded as I could get a dial tome and make calls even when the RT31P2 was behind another router that did not forward any incoming ports to it (but naturally let all outgoing ports flow outbound). Updates from vonage?? I don't know for sure but that might require the tftp incoming port to be properly forwarded.

In your description, you described your topology as going modem->linksys wireless boradband "booster" .... Just what do you mean by a "booster"? An access point, or a router or a bridge .....
