Vonage Have not been able to connect to the LAN with either the Linksys RT31P2 or Motorola

Have not been able to connect to the LAN with either the Linksys RT31P2 or Motorola VT2142 phone/voice gateways. Both are wired not wireless phone adapters. Windows XP Control panel is showing that the network connection is enabled, but the ethernet connection light on the phone gateway does not light up. Cannot simultaneously use the phone and have access to the internet, only one or the other, but not both. This was not a problem until about a month ago. Vonage support determined that the Linksys RT31P2 was defective and replaced with the Motorola VT2142. Still, no ethernet connection between the phone adapter and the computer. Has anyone had this problem and found the solution? Would appreciate some help on this.
