Had the same problem here.

Issue is that (most) UK phones do not have a capacitor internally connected to the line; US phones do. You need a capacitor in the line to make it ring. Same thing happens with your DSL line. DSL master socket has no capacitor in it, so to make your phone work, you need to add one externally. This is accomplished with the DSL "micro filter".

Simple solution to your problem... take a DSL microfilter, plug it into the back of the Vonage router, plug your phone into the micro filter, and voila. Rings aplenty.

Have to really castigate Vonage on this one. First, they are complete knuckleheads not to have realised this. Did they even test their system over here before launching? Second, I spent my entire friday night trying to figure this out, with their "customer support" only exacerbating the problem. First attempt (30 min on hold) they told me the problem was with my firewall and I had to open a bunch of ports. With much fiddling with my router/modem settings, I tried this and it did not work. Thinking I did something wrong, more time on the phone with netgear and linksys customer support. 2nd attempt at Vonage customer support (35 min on hold), they said that some UK phones have different wiring and directed me to this site (I have heard of this, some RJ11 jacks us pins 2/5 and others use 3/4). Much cutting and splicing and one perfectly good phone later, no joy. Finally, with a nights' sleep to think about it, I though the capacitor was the issue. It was..... And it took 30 seconds to fix....

Vonage, please get your act together - 1) supply a proper adaptor with a capacitor (perhaps 2, one with, one without); and 2) train your customer support personnel to address this issue.
