Vonage Greetings Jazzzzy: I would like to add some information that I feel would

Greetings Jazzzzy:

I would like to add some information that I feel would help most users when setting up multiple routers to work with Vonage on one network. I myself have a total of 3 routers in my home network. The first one is the Vonage router, the second is an old Linksys wireless router with a top speed of 11Mpbs and I also have a Netgear wireless router with a top speed of 300Mpbs.

Now yes, all three are routers but only one is the true router, the other two are just configured as glorified switches.

I originally just left all the default settings alone and it worked for a while but noticed QoS issues such as lost host and sometime the phone would act up such as dropped packets. To get around I had to tinker with the settings and after some hair pulling I had to remember to keep it simple. So remember try and keep it simple.

A quick diagram

Internet (ISDN/Cable/ADSL) ->VoIP (Vonage/Packet8) ->Routers/Switches (Token/T-10/T-100 Router and Wireless Router a/b/g/n)

Now your router in the above diagram would be your Vonage device. The reason why I use the Vonage device as my preferred router is because all the routers Vonage deployed since 2004 has Quality of Service (QoS) built in which gives voice calls number one priority, then regular data traffic plus with the exception of the Linksys RTP300 (don’t ask, horrible DNS drops) the Vonage routers are great at using DHCP and DNS effectively.

With that in mind, your other routers above such as a wireless router can be used as a “switch”. You need to DISABLE DHCP on this router because your Vonage device already has DHCP activated so anything that connects with the Vonage device will get an IP address automatically and you don’t have to worry about conflicts with another DHCP host. Trust me. Besides, when enabled as a switch, you can access any router including wireless routers from any point in the network! Okay hopefully anybody reading this is still with me.

So your settings should be this, oh by the way if you don’t like using the 192.168.10.x sample make sure that the first 3 groups including your subnet of is the same, otherwise you may have problems.

Vonage Device Settings:

WAN Settings: DHCP Enabled
Nat Enabled
Firewall Enabled

LAN Settings: LAN DHCP Server Enabled
IP Address:
Range Start:
Range End:
Lease Time: 3600 seconds

Wireless Router 1 (glorified switch)

WAN Settings: Obtain IP from ISP ENABLED also may be labeled as Connect Automatically

IP Address:

Wireless Router 2 (glorified switch)

WAN Settings: Obtain IP from ISP ENABLED also may be labeled as Connect Automatically

IP Address:

For each switch/router just make sure the IP address is something easy for you to remember. It could be or .2 or .3 or .4 just keep it simple. Just remember to keep the routers IP address under your “set range” because your actual computers that log into the network will be assigned IP address within this range otherwise when trying to diagnosis problems a router can be .1 but a computer could be assigned .2 or .3 and another router can be assigned .4. Keep it simple.

Now when configuring these settings, it is easier to program the routers by Ethernet cable than by wireless because sometimes the wireless routers will reset after saving a change and drop the connection. Now once you have set those settings, the Vonage device will rule and keep your telephone happy and it will be the boss of your network.

Lastly hook up the cables. Cable modem plugs into the WAN port on Vonage. Now for the switch to work properly, plug one end of the CAT cable into an open port on the router but not the WAN! I use the 1st ports for this purpose. So plug your cable into an available port and again use the other end and hook it up to any available port on your Vonage router. Do this to all wireless routers. Now pray, and restart all routers by starting them up individually starting with the Vonage device, then plug in a wireless router. Now if you’d remember or your like me, wrote down the IP address of your wireless routers, type in the address in your browser and finish completing the WEP or WAP settings to secure your network.

Now any computer that you add to the network will be assigned an IP address automatically from the Vonage device, even if you connect through a wireless router and depending on how you used your range it will start with .51 .52 .53 .54 etc. and your routers can be access by .20 .30 etc.

I use the slower wireless router as a backup if my high speed wireless decides to quit. I hoped this help and didn’t confuse many people out there.

Talk to you later.

I have a linksys vonage router. It has 2 phone ports and 4 ethernet ports. I want
What you could do, as alot have done here, is get a WRT-54G Linksys wireless router.
Makes sense. Thank you for the information.
