Vonage Got my phone working! Of course, it took two different guys on customer service

Got my phone working! Of course, it took two different guys on customer service THREE HOURS AND FORTY MINUTES, but all my problems seem to be solved now.

Casita, your suggestion about reloading Java worked. Customer service says the site isn't reliant on Java, but something in the reloading helped me reach the site.

Then, the solution to my problems seems to be that my Linksys should have been assigned to PPPoE, but it wasn't enabled, so it wasn't communicating with my DSL. We went to PPPoE PassThrough and disabled that, and then it worked. The Linksys wasn't authenticated, I'm told.

The final hour of service was because Vonage apparently doesn't want people to select their own phone numbers (unlike Verizon, where you can choose your own number for about $3 a month). So, we had to spend a lot of time going through phone numbers until I found one that was, well, not my first choice, but not bad. I'm not happy about that. After all, Vonage clearly thinks that having 1-VONAGE-HELP is a good idea for them, but the rest of us shouldn't have an easy-to-remember phone number. So, rather than have their technicians be able to scroll through or make a selection, the very nice tech guy had to assign me endless streams of numbers (almost 30, I think) until we got to one that was acceptable. Stunning. I'm not impressed with that at all.

My only other choice was to call the phone company, get a phone number of my choice assigned to me, and then switch that to Vonage. But, given the difficulty of working with Vonage, if I got a number from the phone company, I would probably stick with that service.

I also don't like the fact that I have to pay more because I'm a home-based business. After carefully comparing prices, I resent being stuck with a higher bill because I'm a business. I truly don't make more calls because I'm a business, and I don't like the choice between being honest and getting a good rate.

I'll see how I like it. Getting this to work was nowhere as easy as they make it sound: it's been a miserable process. There are long wait periods for tech support. I would at least appreciate a message that says how long I can expect my wait to be. We as customers grade on the curve, and if other companies can tell me how long I'll wait, and other companies can give me a choice of phone numbers, then that is what I expect.

I liked both of the tech support guys I got - Lionel and Manny - and I appreciate their patience with me. And I do like that Vonage lets me choose phone lines with different area codes. We'll see how it goes. Right now, I wouldn't recommend Vonage.

Kathy
