For anyone reading this thread, all I can say is it has come to an interesting but frustrating conclusion. Since my last post I made no more changes and was still having considerable issues with loss of dial tone (Vonage registration) and failure to complete calls. I had to go out of town for 5 days. When I returned, I had a completely stable dial tone and was able to make good quality phone calls.
I can only conclude that Vonage was having some sort of problem. What I hate about this kind of thing is the number of "rat holes" you end up chasing down and time wasted only to find out:
It was not the phone equipment
It was not the router
It was not how the router was set up
It was not my ISP
Worst of all, while it appears to be Vonage, their tech support was unable to identify the problem or provide guidance to a work around.
I am going to try and re-set everything to how it was when this all began and see if it works as before. I had several months of excellent experience.
One thing that I did get clarity on in this exercise was the Uniden UIP1869V phone. Uniden Tech Support confirmed two things.
1). The preferred installation location of the phone is in front of the router. (This is not in either Vonage's instructions or in Uniden's manual, but has been recommended by others.)
2). The phone has undocumented QOS that is automatic and has no user settings. It is be pre-arranged to give Vonage Voip packets first priority.
Thanks to all who attempted to help solve a problem that was outside our ability to do anything about.
