For all of the frustrated Vista users out there, who are still waiting for Vonage's promised fix and are still dealing with crashes, noise, etc, I have a present for you :)
This fix works with the V-Phone. I am posting it because I have had success with it on multiple systems (not just my own) and I'm confident you guys will be able to use it too! I stumbled across this method accidently while trying every last ditch thing I could think of to make the phone work. This is for people who can't get consistent performance out of Vonage's "fix."
It's very simple:
1. Plug in your V-Phone. Make sure you have hidden files shown so you can see the hidden folder on the drive.
2. Create a folder on your desktop called "Vonage."
3. COPY the autodown.exe file to this folder. DO NOT make a shortcut! You want an EXACT copy of the exe file, NOTHING ELSE!
4. Close the V-Phone window. Select the autodown.exe file, and set to Windows XP Sp. 2 compatability mode in the properties menu. Set Run as Administrator if you have this available.
5. Now, with the V-Phone still plugged in, double click on the new autodown.exe file you just created. The software will boot up! You will notice a few things:
a) your contact list will be gone. Unfortunately, this doesn't work if you copy the one on your stick over (at least in my attempts);
b) the desktop folder will contain more files. That's fine, leave them there;
c) the desktop folder will become invisible. If you turn on hidden files, then this shouldn't be a problem. It seems to do this no matter what, but it WILL happen.
6. Close the program and re-start from the desktop file. It should work just about perfectly now! From now on, ALWAYS boot it from the desktop file. YOU STILL NEED TO PLUG IN THE USB KEY!!! Just don't start the program from it!
Ever since using this method, my program has only crapped out ONCE in about 100 uses. Pretty good! Before, it would hang and crash constantly. Hopefully this helps a few of you frustrated V-Phone users to get a bit more enjoyment from your phone!
