Now, what is your understanding of how Vonage gets connected to house wiring? Without an alarm it's pretty simple. First you disconnect everything from any land lines. Then a normal phone cord with RJ11 connectors plugs into the phone port on the Vonage adapter and picks up just the center two contacts. The other end plugs into a wall jack and completes a connectiion to the line 1 contacts (center 2) in that wall jack, effectively connecting you to line 1 throughout the house.
With an alarm things are different. With a land line, the land line is connected to ring and tip on the alarm panel and R1 and T1 on the alarm panel are connected to the rest of the house wiring (usually line 1). This allows the alarm to take preemptive use of the phone line in an emergency by disconnecting it from the R1/T1 terminals. To duplicate this setup with Vonage, you need to disconnect the land line from tip and ring at the panel and connect the output from your Vonage adapter there instead. This generally requires some special wiring, not simply plugging the adapter into a wall jack. Plugging into a wall jack will give you Vonage phone service throughout the house, but the alarm will not be able to call out.
