First, let me say that, so far, I've been very pleased with the T31P2 that I got direct from Vonage. The only thing (at this point in time) I will complain about - and will continue to complain about until they do something different - is the fact that the blasted thing comes with a 110v only power supply. I have lived and worked internationally for 11 years and I have purchased a myriad of electronic devices from Mp3 players, ISDN routers, portable DVD players to laptop power bricks and anything with even the remotest level of portability to it is able to receive any voltage from 110v to 220v. It is beyond my comprehension that anything these days - especially something like the Vonage telephone adapter with such obvious benefits for international usage - would not be able to receive any worldwide voltage. Ok, pardon me while I climb down from my soapbox.
Ok... I also have my RT31P2 setup with my existing SMC wireless router in the same manner as suggested (DSL modem -> SMC router -> RT31P2) and it seems to work just as well as when I by-passed the router and used only the telephone adapter hooked into my DSL modem.
Now, with this setup, I just wanted to clarify that assigning the Vonage box a local IP address is not the same as setting it up with a "static ip" as is sometimes required by various service providers. In the drop-down menu, you will still want the telephone adapter to be automatically assigned an IP address. A little further down (at least in the web interface I use) I disabled DHCP and assigned the adapter a LOCAL IP address in the same IP range as my router in order to facilitate their communication.
