FINALLY, resolution. I just got finished working with Tier II Tech Support (which is a night and day difference from working with the Tier I guys, who mean well, but often don't have the slightest idea what they're dong). What happened yesterday, according to the Tier II guy, is they had a fairly major server outage while they were in the middle of pushing out the Version 5 Firmware (this would explain the timeout the Tier I lady I wrote about previously saw). This effectively reset our routers back to square 1 (factory default settings).

Following some of your lead, I decided that since version 1.00.62 had been problem-free for me for nearly 2 full years that I wanted to just have them re-flash me back to that firmware, and he oblliged. He also indicated that there would likely not be another firmware upgrade for this router for quite some time (if ever, he said), so although he couldn't put the "do not update this guy's firmware" flag on my router, he did not feel it would be a problem.

So, problem solved. Back to 1.00.62 and a happy camper. Everything works, no internet dropouts, NAS continuously connected. Awesome. Not awesome that I had to deal with it, but awesome that it works again.
