Ezco Is right..

In order for me to intercept your SIP (VOIP) traffic. I have would have to sniff the packets coming into and out of your internet provider.

I'd also have to determine if your Voip provider had encrypted the traffic with SSL and or another encryption. I'd then have to decrypt that traffic, and log it, passing the unmodified packet to you.. I'd then have to do the exact same for the traffic you sent..

I'd have to do this at a speed that would keep your conversation going without drop outs and or packet loss.. Unless one had allot of money to put into equipment, it's highly unlikely from the internet side.

Now, If I was the FBI, and had reasonable doubt, (ROFL) I could install a device called a raptor. This would log every single packet that came into or out of your computer, period. You'd never know, as the only warrant I would have to submit (If any) would be to the ISP. You can thank our senators who passed the patriot act for this.

If i was a nosy neighbor, I would have to build a customized router, install in between your cable modem and your cable node (where the RF converts to Fiber) It would require allot of planning, work, and bribes to the cable company, as I couldn't just "Tap" the line, but i would have to sever the connection and sniff every packet that came thru. Also note i would be sniffing all of the other users in your neighborhood, slowing down the network, ect.

What comcast is talking about, (as ezco pointed out) is that Comcast places the Voip traffic on a separate subnet of the network, or for marketing reasons they may say it's out of band. All it means is that the cable company is putting it on different fiber at the node and trying to keep it in their network as long as they can, because it's cheaper than paying fees to other providers for bandwidth.

In regards to the person in India.. I would say your neighbor has a old radio scanner and is is listening to your phone calls from your cordless phone.

If you are using a corded phone, check to see that this isn't wrapped around some other conductor OR If your using the phone wires in your home but never disconnected them from the local telephone company, your providing dial tone to that wire all the way to where the phone company cut it off.. Your neighbor may be listening that way..

Good luck!
