Don't buy Vphone to get "free" software. Vonage has XTen free online and SJLabs is also free and a good softphone.
A Vonage softphone line has a monthly charge, but the software is free. The software will not work with your main account number, but with the softphone add-on.
Save some bucks; get a softphone line and use the free software. The only reason I can see for using VPhone is if you use public PCs and then the pre-loaded software *may* be useful.
I use softphone exclusively at home, and send the *box* on the road with an employee. Sound quality and functionality is excellent and using a digital handset (CyberPhoneK) places no load on PC resources. (Bypasses onboard sound circuits). Softphone will only run from a single location, so when traveling, merely make sure the home location is turned off, then log in from anywhere you have wifi. When traveling, I use a Plantronics noise-cancelling earbud/boom mike with superb quality sound.
For a free Vonage softphone, see the features page. You will still need a softphone account to make it work. SJLabs softphone is also free and I prefer it to the XTen , but they both function well.
Once you sign up for softphone, the softphone password (not your main password) is found on the set-up page for the softphone and is required to make the softphone work.
I *presume* the Vphone will also require a softphone password (softphone add-on) to be functional. I may be wrong (??)
