Do you know what color the wires were in the network interface box? You also mentioned that some were tied together in the box. Were these wires coming from the same cable? what color were they?
Most network interface boxes have three or four sets of screw posts in them. these are for three or four separate lines. All should have a green color tab on one post and a red color tab on the matching post (tip and ring).
The wires coming in from your house are probably from a cable that has red/green/yellow/black wires. You may have several cables coming in with the same colors. If your only dealing with one phone line, make sure that none of the green wires are connected to the red wires and that none of the yellow wires are connected to the black wires. red to red is ok and green to green is ok. black to black is ok, yellow to yellow is ok. Depending on your house wiring, yellow and red may be connected together and green and black may be connected together.
There should be no bare copper exposed on the wires. Either it needs to be connected to a screw post, trimmed off or covered in electricians tape or some other inslulator.
If the wires are different colors than those, let us know.
