Definitely not a stupid question. Yes, with the D-link VTA you need to have a router if you want your phone and computer to both work at the same time, as I'm sure you do. If you already have a router, that's great; if not, then one of the combos is an option. Buying another router is also an option, but make sure that it has QoS capability if you go that route. You need to be able to tell the router to favor the Vonage connection whenever there's a competition for bandwidth. That prevents choppy calls.
So which way should you go? Well consider total cost. Also consider the fact that the Vonage combos are fine for light duty work (I use one), but they're not very good for heavy duty internet activity. For that, a good router with QoS is the way to go. If you elect to keep the D-link, make sure that it's marked for Vonage use on the box. If you exchange it for a combo, make sure that the combo is marked for Vonage use.
