Vonage DarrelG - Yes, it's true, for a lot of people the WRTP54G will work. The WRTP54G

DarrelG -

Yes, it's true, for a lot of people the WRTP54G will work. The WRTP54G suffers from limitations, but those limitations will not affect many people.

If you have plenty of upstream bandwidth that you never use all of it while on the phone, for example, you don't need QoS. Since the WRTP54G's QoS is ineffective (at least for me), and I only have 256k upstream (measured at about 200k), Vonage uses almost half of my available bandwidth when it is running. I NEED QoS, and the WRTP54G wasn't cutting it for me.

On the other hand, as in Johnny5mm's case, he has over 2mbps upstream. That's a LOT of load for that router. So his problem is the opposite of mine - his feast to my famine. He's got too much bandwidth for the limited processor on the WRTP54G to handle, AND do voice, AND do wireless.

The WRTP54G is a most excellent Vonage device. The voice quality is clear, and it's rock solid. As a router - well - it's a good consumer router. It's actually running the solid and venerable WRT54G Linux-based operating system, which is a good OS, and the hardware is top notch. Unfortunately, there's no way to adjust QoS upstream, rendering QoS nearly useless unless it happens to guess properly at your upstream connection, and there's no way to fix the "5 day connections" bug where it maintains idle connections for 5 days before finally timing them out, which is the bane of many P2P users existence.

Other than those defects, and a comparatively weak processor, it's a top notch comsumer router. Unfortunately, adding Voip to the processing mix really takes away power that could be used elsewhere.

On my setup, when I put the WRTP54G behind a WRT54G, and disabled wireless on the WRTP54G and stopped using it for routing, the WRTP54G showed a marked improvement in voice quality, and I got comments from people that my voice sounded amazingly clear, where before I was getting complaints of breakup (due to lack of QoS) and a "fuzziness" even when I wasn't using my network for anything else.

Having two processors - one for voice and one for routing and wireless - made a HUGE difference for me in quality and stability. My WRT54G (now known as the WRT54GL) has been a welcome addition to my network, and with the aftermarket firmware I'm running I get extras like automated P2P QoS, Static DHCP, Wake-on-LAN, and tons of little extras I can't even count.

As with all things, your mileage can and will vary. If the WRTP54G works for you, then I'm the LAST person to advocate spending $75-100 for a decent router to put in front of it. And, of course, if you do buy a router or "front end device", the Hawking is reportedly very good.
