Vonage DallasFlier is absolutely right about the delay. In a perfect world it will be

DallasFlier is absolutely right about the delay. In a perfect world it will be very clear audio, but with a delay. It is tolerable but noticable.

I think the main challenge you will have is getting either your ISP or Vonage to even take more than a glancing look at any problems you have. The instant they see (or hear) the word "satellite" they switch to the defensive and start spouting off semi-choerent things about latency and bandwidth. Once they start that, it is almost insurmountable. You have to be very smart about both satellite and networking to catch them in inconsitencies that will keep the support ticket going up the chain.

The things that I hear most from Vonage are:

The latency is too high.

This is their absolute favorite "Ace up the sleeve" for satellite broadband Voip problems. Mark my words, you will hear it until you are sick. I was told last week that DirecWay would have to reduce the latency to less than 500ms for Vonage to work. Once I pointed out that the satellite would have to be brought into a low earth orbit to acheive that he sent it back up to higher level support.

You don't have sufficient upload bandwidth

This is the one they use when I tell them that my inbound calls are fine, but my outbound ones are jittery on the sending side only. I had two different techs tell met that was due to the fact that when I call out, I am using more bandwidth. I pointed out that duplex telephone conversations require the same amount of uplink and downlink bandwidth no matter who called who...we are both talking in both cases. That got me sent back to "Higher level support" too. If they try this one on you, go to SpeakEasy.net and run the bandwidth test. If you have more than 90K up then you have enough.

And the final last hope of the baffled tech:

We can't provide support for satellite service.

Obviously.

In all fairness I have been working with a Vonage tech who is very knowledgable and has not once attempted to give me the same old nonsense explainations of why my service doesn't work. So this isn't over.

My point in all of this is to let you know that if (and when) you do have problems, it is a fight to get anyone to do anything about it. Your ISP blames Vonage and Vonage blames your ISP. The "S" word (Satellite) is a customer service killer.

using wrtp54g overseas on satelite internet broadband

does anyone have any experience (good or bad) with using wrt54gp with satelite
I have not used that modem, but I am using an RPT300 with DirecWay Professional.
Bottom line is - the absolute BEST case is that you'll see about a half second delay
I'd test the sat connection first using www.testyourvoip.com to Boston if you
