Vonage :D I gave up on the Motorola ATA outside of my firewall as it loses dialtone

I gave up on the Motorola ATA outside of my firewall as it loses dialtone daily. It is either being port scanned too much from outside or it cannot handle the internal traffic from the firewall passing thru it.

So I put it inside the Cisco PIX firewall to minimize both problems. Spent hours debugging and it would not work. Finally I opened a browser session to the ATA / 192.168.102.1 (using a straight thru cable from my PC direct to the ATA) and changed it's IP Address to a manual address and rebooted the ATA. Lo and behold it now works. No other changes to the PIX were needed.

A friend said he had identical issue inside a PIX i.e. you have to statically address the ATA or it will not work. I am a CCIE and it makes no sense to me (it was previously getting a DHCP address fine and was pingable). I even had all ports open both ways on the PIX to test it and it still would NOT work. BOTTOM LINE _ SET IP ADDRESS MANUALLY IF YOU HAVE A MOTOROLA ATA INSIDE A PIX FIREWALL

Hope that Vonage read this and put it on their site. They had no idea how to solve it.

I now have to wait and see if I lose dialtone inside the PIX. If I do it will be in the garbage by tomorrow.
