Vonage DLevenson, thanks for the reply. Some thoughts: All this was before

DLevenson, thanks for the reply. Some thoughts:

All this was before the web existed, before all the free phone-number lookup services came into being. Consider why people created these alternatives. Could it be to escape the tedium - and later, the cost - of making a call to get a phone number, to make yet another call?

I make no DA calls. Haven't for years. I don't expect other customers to subsidize my calling habits, but I likewise sure don't want to subsidize theirs. V's new fees propose to force me to do just that.

I emailed Customer Service to ask them not to impose this fee. On Friday 4/16, Kamal replied. His explanation was involved, but the heart of it was:

So, it pays to ask! The upside is the year-long 'grace period' this works out to be. The downside is that it ends after a year, and I still can't just opt out altogether.

Thank you! Now, please vote "Yes" in my poll.

I've been on the Basic 500 Plan since May 2005. Back then it was $16.94/month. Now it totals $23.21/month. These two new fees will add $1 to my monthly bill, but my calling habits seldom bring me even close to the 500-minute ceiling.

Policy changes that raise my bill by 4.3% to $24.21, when I've done nothing to merit the higher fees, are entirely unwelcome.

A company that offers service to new customers for $14.99/month, but doesn't offer me a comparable deal when I've been a loyal customer for nearly five years, strikes me as short-sighted and disrespectful.

It also seems inappropriate to ask long-term customers to carry even more of the cost for the company's legal expenses and new customers, yet that's exactly what the other 50-cent monthly fee does.

You can see that V paid more than $304 for each new customer and suffered a 3.1% churn rate in 2009. See V's 2/26/2010 Annual 10K Report on their Annual Filings page. See Item 7, Page 28, Management's Discussion. At the bottom of the page is the table of key metrics that I'm referring to.

Googling for compare [V] [competitor name], and visiting broadbandreports.com will shed more light on this for you. So far, voipo seems to be a good alternative ...
