DD-WRT is available at www.dd-wrt.com

There are also other alternatives, like HyperWRT (the one mentioned in my articles), and many others. Any of them will work, as will the stock firmware if you set it up correctly.

Well, yeah, it "officially" void the warranty. On the other hand, you can always flash back on the manufacturer's firmware if you need to and there won't be any trace the aftermarket stuff was there. Also, there are lots of reports of people returning routers for valid warranty defects and not having the slightest trouble getting a return auth (if the hardware fries, Linksys has no idea what firmware was on the smoking remains, for example). So if you have a bona fide hardware issue, it should have no effect on the warranty.

As far as "might have holes", if you could only see the holes that each of the aftermarket teams FIXED in the original Linksys code. Oh, wait... you can! The aftermarket stuff is all open source (it has to be, since the original Linksys code is released under the GPL, so anyone who wants to use it has to also release their source code). It's been pretty extensively tested and reviewed by people who have an idea of what they are looking for.

But, the fact is, the WRT54GL's built in firmware will probably do the trick for you. Just be sure to configure your upstream data rate properly as per my articles, and you should be fine.

The aftermarket is comprised of two big players (and many others):

HyperWRT is a project designed to stay as close to the native firmware as possible, while adding lots of features. As a new Linksys release comes out, HyperWRT is reapplied to the native code by the developers, meaning that the code is very close to stock Linksys stuff.

DD-WRT is a project designed to add as many features as possible. It is a near-complete rewrite of the native code, and left the Linksys barn years ago. It's heavily feature rich, and very cool stuff.

Personally, HyperWRT has everything I need, and looks and feels a lot like native stuff, so I chose it for a while. Recently, I have been playing with a new project from one of the original HyperWRT authors called "Tomato". Strange name, really good firmware.
