More seriously, I'd agree that a plain old phone list is typically more reliable. I don't disagree for a second that there are outages (no system ever built has none) but the average caller usually goes for ridiculous lengths of time without having any real problems with it. I mean, it's not like you ever pick up your landline wondering if you're going to get a dial tone this time, is it? :)

The last time I remember having any sort of problem was on Sept. 11th, but there just wasn't enough capacity to go around on that day. The connection out to my local switch was fine, but most of the PSTN was completely jammed.

If my life depended on it, I'd make sure I had a landline kicking around the place, plus a mobile for backup. It's a somewhat unappreciated fact that all mobile phones must be able to place an emergency call regardless of whether their owner is paying for service or not (and, in the case of GSM phones, even if there is no SIM card in the phone). If it meant that much and I had no other need for mobile service, I'd just buy the cheapest mobile I could get a hold of but not sign up for service.

Personally, I haven't had to contact customer service as of yet, other than to place my initial order. I'll have to fax in my letter to get my local number switched over - maybe the fun will begin then...
