Can anyone help?

I've had a simple working network for many months but I've never bothered with opening ports for P2P programs etc. However, I now need to open ports for a few programs to work and I therefore need static IPs. My routers are set up as follows...

Modem -> RT31P2 -> WRT54G-> computers

The RT31P2 port 1 is connected to the WAN port on the WRT54G
The WRT54G is hard wired via ports 1 and 2 to two desktop PCs
The WRT54G is also used by two wireless laptops
All of these PCs must be able to see each other through the network.

What settings do I need to change to make the desktop PCs have static IPs. I want the laptops to stay as they are (automatically detecting settings) as they are used on more than one network (home, work, etc)

Please be as detailed as you can because I'm pretty useless! I thought I got it right last night and then this morning it all went flatline on me (since then I've reset everything so I'm back to square one).
