CRSharff

I normally stay out of these discussions. There seems to be a lot of bad experiences around here with the WRTP54G. But before you make your purchasing decision, you should hear from someone who has a good experience with the product.

Back in June I decided to buy a WRTP54G to replace my old Linksys BEFW11S4 v2. The old router was "b" only and Vonage was offering a "G for free" promotion. By trading in my old router I could get the WRTP54G essentially for free, as long as I tried Vonage for 3 months. I figured in the worst case, Vonage wouldn't be suitable for me, I'd cancel the service, and get a 54MB upgrade for free out of the deal.

Well, I'm still a Vonage customer 9 months later. Very happy with both the hardware and the service. The only problem I experienced was the infamous "reverse echo" which afflicted some of the early firmware versions and is now fixed. The wireless router portion is solid as a rock for my purposes. The signal reaches all the way from my basement (where I put the router...those blinking lights gave me a headache :) ) to the second floor of my house. My layout is like this:

1. Cable modem and router in the basement.
2. My notebook and a wireless printer in the 1st floor family room.
3. My desktop and my wife's notebook on the second floor (both wireless).
4. I also have an X-Box connected via a Powerline adapter to one of the router's ethernet ports.

The desktop on the second floor has a Belkin wireless card which shows consistent 95 - 100% signal strength. This is with the desktop at the opposite side of the house from the router and the signal having to travel through 2 floors.

The Speakeasy speed test consistently shows that I am getting close to the full bandwidth advertised by my ISP. You'll never get the full amount on a cable connection, since it is shared bandwidth. I am supposed to have 5M down and 2M up. The test shows consistently at LEAST 4.5M down and 1.6M up.

As far as load is concerned, I primarily use the connection for work (VPN connection using ATT) to monitor and administer servers. I also use Lotus Notes email, web, and I DO run uTorrent usually around 4 hours per evening. Never experienced any interference with voice quality or had to reboot the router due to running out of memory.

For the past few firmware releases, I have never had to do an unscheduled reboot of the router. It only reboots when Vonage downloads a new firmware release. (Both the router and cable modem are on a UPS so they survives power failures)

Maybe there are manufacturing difficulties with this model and I was just lucky enough to get one of the "good" ones. But in my experience this product is no worse than your typical consumer grade router. It is certainly equivalent to my old BEFW11S4 - only faster.

I can't comment on the VT1000, the only thing I can say is that if it works well as
Most reports on the Motorola SB5120 say Vonage is great with them, as well as ISP's.
This is how ours is set up. We have a seperate wireless router for our internet and
Well I can sure say that I am glad I made a thread here before I made a purchasing decision!
Hi guys I am looking for a good all in one router, I want it to have wireless also.
I don't recommend that. Vonage devices are known for being great phone adapters,
Then you only have one choice. The WRTP54G is the only currently available wireless
All-in-one/combination devices are usually a compromise device. Combo fax/printer/scanners
Try the WRT54 GL , which can be upgraded with aftermarket firmware that will really
