But Kevin, the internal Windows firewall IS a software firewall! :-) Just not a very good one! You're right, if your router has a hardware firewall, it takes care of inbound attack attempts for the most part. A *good* software firewall also monitors and will prevent a rogue process (in case you do get a virus or trojan) from sending outbound communications to the internet. Note that I say "a *good* software firewall", because the sucky Windows one won't! The internal firewall is virtually worthless if you have a hardware firewall. And ZoneAlarm Pro will not have any noticable effect on your software download speeds. I still get the full 8M benchmark speeds when I test my 8M line here - through ZoneAlarm and the WRT54G firewall.
