Believe me, I went through the same angst. Fortunately, in my case, the router was free after the rebate finally came through.
Once you get a few firmware updates, I think you'll start to realize that combining routing and other services is just a bad idea, especially when someone ELSE controls the firmware on your router.
The WRTP54G is a good "consumer grade" router for basic, low volume use. As long as you don't have a super high speed connection, or want to do too terribly much with your connection while on the phone, you'll probably be very happy with it as a router.
I'm taking it on the road with me to Florida this month when I visit my father, because I'll be working during the day and I'll need to have my phone line with me. It'll probably do just fine to manage my Vonage line, my laptop, and his computer, as long as I watch the sending of large emails over the VPN while on conference calls.
However, if you have a very fast connection that you want to make the most of, or a really slow connection (like me) that you really NEED to make the most of, the WRTP54G falls pretty flat.
