Vonage Before I get into my answer I will qualify my answer by saying I am not an employee

Before I get into my answer I will qualify my answer by saying I am not an employee or insider at Vonage so I may be totally wrong. But, if you look at the Voip industry, the POTs industry, and your terms of service you will get an explanation (not an solution) that is most likely correct:

First, one difference between 1-800-CALLATT capability and Voip can be found in the Terms of Service (ToS):

In other words, Voip is an emerging alternative to the world of POTs and Vonage is providing you an interface back to the world of POTs. Eventually the old copper lines go away with the numberng system (a fellow forum poster made me realize the numbering system will go away). As such, I would bet SBC/AT&T considers Vonage more of a threat than Vonage cares about SBC/AT&T. The only exception would be the Callvantage service that could be considered a competitor to Vonage. As such they might let you use 1-800-CALLATT as it is the same company, but I bet you would find this problem at other Voip companies, if their service fits your needs (it didn't mine).

You will also discover in research that most POTs companies consider Voip a serious threat to the easy money POTs companies have made off the regulatory recovery fees, etc. for building their copper network. It was built years ago and has long been recovered. It could very easily be that SBC/AT&T is blocking the 1-800-CALLATT rather than Vonage, but I can see that either way tracking could become a mess because it is two different systems with an interface between.

This distinction can be seen again in another paragraph of the ToS:

Unfortunately, if that isn't something that can work for you, then you may not be ready for the savings provided through Voip. While I think Vonage has led the effort in making this technology easy for most people, even at the frustration of some techies, in my opinion it may not be right for everyone. You may either want to go back to POTs and high prices or keep a POTs line around until the death of the POTs systems. Trust me that day is coming. Either way you will pay a little for this capability. I know you said you had a reason and it isn't my concern, but it does confuse me.

You will find that when Voip does take over there will be no need for 800, 888, 877, 866, or toll charges. At that point in time our friends at the POTs systems will lose a profit center.

I'm sorry you have this problem. And I don't have a solution for you. Just an explanation that is my opinion. No matter which road you take I definitely wish you well and hope it works out.
